Rainy season car checklist for Jamaica

May–June and September–November rains bring flooded gullies, slick roads and hidden potholes. Here's how to get your car ready.

Tyres

Tread under 3 mm doesn't clear water well. Check depth with a coin and keep pressures at the door-sticker figure.

Wipers and lights

  • Replace wiper blades every 12 months: sun cracks the rubber
  • Clean foggy headlight lenses
  • Check brake lights with a friend

Brakes

Wet roads double stopping distances. Have pads, rotors and brake fluid checked before the season.

Never drive through deep water

Water sucked into the air intake can bend connecting rods instantly (hydrolock). If you can't see the road markings, turn around.
